4 Simple Ways to Boost Your Immune System
More than ever it is important to be prioritising your physical and mental health. Nutrition is key to keeping and building our immunity. Fuelling your body with certain types of food can help keep your immune system strong and resilient.
We asked our Head Dietitian, Tara Kaff, for her top 3 tips to give your immune system the boost it needs.
1. Prebiotics
What are prebiotics? We're sure you are all aware of probiotics, this being the healthy gut bacteria that helps keeps our immune system healthy. But what keeps these little guys alive? It's prebiotics! Better known as fibre or resistant starch.
Just like we need energy from food, our healthy gut bacteria also require food for energy. This is where prebiotics come in. Here's where to find them:
- Green bananas
- Garlic
- Jerusalem artichoke
- Onion
- Apples
- Oats
- Raw Probiotics Biotic Ferment
A powerhouse of gut-friendly ingredients, our Raw Probiotics combines 5 probiotic strains, prebiotics and organic fermented wholefoods to promote digestive balance.
2. Antioxidants
Every day, our body experiences what’s called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to the production of free radicals which can damage cell walls, cell DNA and can create inflammation. Antioxidants help keep free radicals to a healthy level.
This then leads to less stress on our immune system, keeping it healthy and functioning well. All berries, fruits and vegetables contain healthy antioxidant levels, Acai especially! Our Raw Acai Freeze Dried powder has 21x more antioxidants than blueberries.
3. Vitamin C
Vitamin C exerts several different roles when it comes to immunity. Vitamin C assists with protecting the cells from oxidative stress spoken about above and also helps with the development of immune cells that protect against infection.
Scientific research suggests Vitamin C doesn’t prevent a common cold, however, it can reduce its duration. Good sources of Vitamin C include oranges, lemons, limes, berries, kiwifruit, broccoli, tomatoes, capsicum and our Raw Wholefood Extracts Vitamin C+.
Our certified organic, non-synthetic formula contains 1000% RDI Vitamin C per serve in a highly bioavailable form.
Eating and getting the right nourishment is a great start to boost your immune system, apart from the fresh foods and produce the right supplements can give you the fighting edge you need.
4. Greens
Dark, leafy greens are excellent sources of fibre, Folate, Iron, Calcium, and Vitamin C. They play a critical role in regulating the immune system by providing important chemical symbols that encourage immune cells in the gut to function properly.
If you struggle to eat enough green veggies each day (or you simply don't like the taste of them), then you might benefit from adding a greens powder into your diet! It's an easy way to get extra nutrition each day.
